These unthreaded nuts are common on modern Audi cars. They are almost always used to secure the plastic wheel arch linings. The unthreaded nut is tightened onto a coarsely threaded stud that is part of the inner arch bodywork. After removal, it's best to replace the nut as they become looser after being reused.
